National Standards for Perioperative Care Following Cleft Surgery

Aim.
These are the minimum standards of care that should be offered to families of children undergoing primary and secondary surgery.
Standard 1
The family/child should be informed and prepared for surgery.
Standard 2
The family/child are to be met and welcomed within ½ an hour of arrival by the allocated nurse.
Standard 3
The family/child are informed of their allocated nurse for each shift.
Standard 4
Both parents are given the opportunity to be resident within the hospital during their child’s hospital stay.
Standard 5
Both parents are given the opportunity to be present in the anaesthetic room whilst their child is anaesthetised.
Standard 6
Both parents are given the opportunity to be with their child in the recovery room.
Standard 7
Oral fluids/food are to be offered when the child is awake and alert.
Standard 8
The family/child feel that their pain was controlled post operatively.
Standard 9
Following surgery the family/child should feel informed and supported regarding all aspects of postoperative care.
Standard 10
Verbal and written information should be given regarding continuing care in a format family/child can understand.
